College Drupal Platform Initiative
The College Drupal Platform Initiative is a Agricultural Communications Services project to develop a standard CMS-based website platform, and make it available to every unit and department in the College. The first generation of this platform will be based on Drupal 7, and will include a new standard College design developed using responsive techniques to accomodate a range of user devices. It will also include a standard set of features most requested for College websites. Platform development is being executed by Ag Comm's Integrated Media section, and the lead developer is Andy Shooner.
The College Drupal platform will provide several significant improvements over existing Drupal and other College websites:
- Faster security and feature updates
- Improved base theme design for better accessibility
- Easier interface for website contributors
- A single, unified codebase, allowing all websites to benefit from bugfixes and additional features.
We are in the feature discovery phase of the project. For that, we need input from College of Ag website users (specifically administration and technical staff). The input of these stakeholders will guide the development of initial features of the platform, as well as a roadmap for future improvements.
If you are a department/unit administrator, or a web professional, we need your help to make this tool great. Here's how you can contribute:
Join the Platform Group
This initiative's primary communication channel will be an email listserv: CoA Drupal 7 Platform Development (COA-D7-PLATFORM-DEV@lsv.uky.edu). We will also be using a Trello board to lay out feature concepts and vote on them. To join the Trello CoA Drupal Platform Group, contact Andy Shooner.
Represent Your Unit
Talk to your website's users. Find out what they like and don't like, and what website features would make your site a better tool for your site visitors and web team.
Take Part in a Pilot Project
As development progresses on the platform, Ag Comm will be looking to partner with departments and units willing to help test the new design and capabilities. These partners will play a critical role in getting the platform ready for launch.
